Gillian Anderson is most well known as the actress who plays Special Agent Dana Scully on the hit Fox show, The X-Files. Gillian is very well known today through her excellence in acting. Gillian lived 9 of her first 11 years in England where she acquired an English accent still slightly heard today. After her move back from England, she settled in the Chicago suburbs where she was born. Perhaps from loneliness, Gillian became a rebellious teenager. She would often swear at complete strangers, got her navel pierced, and insisted on dating a punk rocker seven years older than she was. Sometimes she would be the backstage singer for him, dressed in nothing much. " I was angry" she had said, "and that was my way of keeping people at a distance. I was always off in my own little world, or in the principle's office for talking back." Her classmates voted her "Class Clown", "Most Bizarre Girl", and "Mostly likely to go bald". No one, not even Gillian herself knew how big an impact theater and acting was going to have on her later.
Gillian's goal in life had been to become a scientist of some sort. She had wanted to be a marine biologist. However after performing in her school's production of Romeo and Juliet, Gillian discovered her interest in drama. This led her to DePaul University to study drama and acting. She graduated when she was 22 and her first major production was an off-Broadway show, Absent Friends. However that did not last her long. Soon after she was unemployed again so she became a waitress to earn her living.
Gillian Anderson decided to re-locate to LA since her New York career wasn't working out too well. There she did a film called The Turning and a short lived series called Class of '96. Then she was out of work again. In 1993, she received a script for the pilot of The X-Files. Gillian read it, and auditioned for it. The day she was cast in the series was the day her last unemployment check arrived. After she joined the cast and crew of The X-Files, she fell in love and married Clyde Kotz. Soon after her honeymoon, Gillian found out that she was pregnant. The twist in the show with Scully being abducted and having cancer was a result of Gillian's sudden pregnancy. Anderson took a ten day maternity leave and during that time, Scully was abducted by aliens to explain her absence. She delivered Piper Maru on 9/25/94 by Caesarean section, and both mother and child were healthy.
